Notes and cards
Choose a note type, write a clear prompt, or build a type of your own.
A note holds what you write. Its type decides which cards you study. One note can make several cards, each with its own schedule.
Add a note
Open a deck and choose Add notes. You write on the card itself: the fields sit where they show when you study, under Front and Back. Choose the type above the card to switch it; the picker shows each type as a small card. Fill in the fields, then choose Add (or ⌘ Enter); the editor stays open for the next note, and Undo takes back the one just added. If a note can't make a card yet, Rondo says what's missing, and when it makes several, See them shows each.
To edit a note, choose it in a deck or in Browse, or press E while studying: the editor opens over the card, and the session carries on after you save.
Note types
| Type | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Basic | One question, one answer. |
| Basic and reversed | A card in each direction. |
| Type the answer | Typing the answer; case and accents don't count. |
| Cloze | Hiding parts of a text: one card per cloze number. |
| Image occlusion | Hiding parts of an image: drag on it to draw masks, one card each. |
| Vocabulary | A word, its reading, meaning and sound: recognize it, then recall it. |
Clozes
Select some text and choose Cloze (⌘ ⇧ C). Each new cloze gets the next number; text with the same number hides together on one card. Put the cursor inside a cloze to give it a hint, shown in the blank, or to show its words again.
Formatting
Select text and its formatting appears above it: bold, italic, underline, highlight, clozes, code, subscript, superscript, maths, readings, lists and tables. You can also type maths straight into the text: $x^2$ becomes inline maths, a line of $$\int f$$ a block.
A reading is ruby text over a word, for furigana or pinyin: select the word and choose Reading.
Drop, paste or choose an image; it's kept at most 2,048 pixels wide. Sounds can be dropped, chosen from a file or recorded. Replace and Remove change them.
Your own types
In the type picker, choose Add custom type and a type to start from, or open Profile › Templates. Your types have a pencil to change them. A type is shaped on the card:
- Fields sit on its front (what it asks) or its back (the answer): text, an image or a sound. Rename a field where it is, move it up or down, or add one to either side.
- A text field can be in the deck's language: Rondo reads it aloud in that language's voice and spell-checks it in that language. Other fields are never read aloud. In the built-in types, Front (and a vocabulary note's Word and Example) is in the deck's language; give the deck a language in its settings.
- Questions add cards: Ask both ways also asks from the answer, Type the answer asks you to type it first, Listening plays a sound on its own.
Every card, block by block shows everything else: each card's front and back as blocks (a field, a divider, a label, or a type-in box), field sizes, and One card per cloze or mask. The preview shows the first card for sample text as you go.
Keep prompts focused
Ask for one fact at a time. Put explanations or examples on the answer side so the prompt stays easy to recall.
